Concentra to Break New Ground With Four-year Pledge to CDF Canada

Ottawa, April 11, 2018Concentra has joined CDF Canada’s Breaking New Ground Campaign with a four-year pledge.

“Partnering with CDF Canada to support their important work is a privilege for Concentra. The Breaking New Ground Campaign is very much aligned with Concentra’s commitment to the co-operative principles, and we are so pleased to make this $300,000 multi-year investment with CDF Canada,” said Don Coulter, President and CEO of Concentra.

“We thank Concentra for designating this generous gift to achieve the goals of our Breaking New Ground campaign,” says CDF Canada Board Chair Michele Aasgard. “Concentra is a valued, longstanding CDF Canada partner, giving generously of their time, money and talent to help others create enduring prosperity the co-operative way.”

“Through this pledge, Concentra is helping credit unions around the world bring financial services to more people, narrow the gender gap and foster lasting community growth and resilience.”

Concentra’s $75K contribution this year is their largest annual donation to CDF Canada since they started giving in 2003.

Launched during Co-op Week last year, the Breaking New Ground campaign is improving the social and economic well being of 500,000 women, men, children and their communities through co-operative development. More than $1.3 million has been generously pledged as of today towards our goal of five million dollars over the next three years. This money is planting the seeds of a more prosperous life for 130,000 fellow co-operators around the world.

CDF Canada and its partners are establishing women’s microfinance groups so that more women like Sarah Babor can achieve their goals.

Sarah has been the proud leader of a women’s microfinance group in her village in northern Ghana for over ten years now, but held back as a leader because of her illiteracy. After attending training through CDF Canada’s FOSTERING project, she learned to read, write and speak a little English.

Today, Sarah continues to lead her microfinance group and has taken on the role of chairperson for her agricultural co-operative. Her microfinance group is more successful than ever and has started a new bee keeping business. Thanks to Sarah’s literacy skills, the group no longer relies on men to write their loan applications. Sarah’s literacy has offered members new-found independence when it comes to receiving and repaying loans from the credit union.
