Peru: INVEST Co-op

Project at a glance

Peru is the second largest producer of organic cacao in the world and the second largest producer and exporter of specialized coffees. The national government recently declared cacao the ‘flagship product of Peru' in recognition of its role as an export commodity and revenue generator for rural communities.

The INVEST Co-op Peru project works with cacao and coffee producers in the regions of Piura, Cajamarca, Lambayeque and Amazonas. These four regions of Peru have high genetic diversity in cacao and coffee but have suffered from a lack of investment which has resulted in declining yields over time. Working with our partner, Norandino, the project will benefit 4,349 farmers directly and indirectly by providing capacity building and inputs to 13 primary organizations. The co-operative's goals are sustainable development, improvement of the quality of life, and the eradication of poverty in accordance with the expectations, aspirations and well-being of smallholder farmers.

The INVEST Co-op Peru project will:

• provide inputs and technology to producers and primary level cooperatives to support their transition to organic production, increase water access, improve the cacao fermentation and drying processes, and provide isolated producers with a storage facility.

• increase the quality and quantity of coffee and cacao production of smallholder farmers through: specialized technical support, improved coffee irrigation systems and access to water for cacao cultivation and a fertilization plan for coffee and cacao cultivation.

• increase gender equality and the inclusion of youth through youth and women managed nursing plots that provide for an opportunity to manage a business, generate income, and increase their interest in becoming members of their primary-level cooperative.

• strengthen the organizational capacity of co-operatives and their ability to provide improved value-added services to members through workshops on organizational and financial management, new equipment for the coffee processing plant and cacao liquor plant and the construction of warehouses and wells.
