Why Choose CDF Canada?

At CDF Canada, sustainability isn’t a buzzword — it’s at the heart of everything we do.

We believe real change lasts only when it’s locally led and community-owned. That’s why our volunteers don’t just complete assignments; they help build the systems, skills, and relationships that keep growing long after a project ends.

By sharing your expertise through CDF, you become part of a cycle of sustainable impact; empowering people, strengthening co-operatives, and shaping solutions that stand on their own.

Create Lasting Change

Volunteering with CDF Canada is more than an opportunity — it’s a partnership. Whether you want to share your expertise, gain international experience, or contribute to sustainable global development, volunteering through VOICE allows you to make a real and lasting impact.

Since 1947, the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada has leveraged the co-operative model — a people-centered approach to building inclusive and sustainable economies — to advance gender equality, economic empowerment, and environmental resilience for more than 50,000 people across Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi.

As a volunteer, you’ll help strengthen local co-operatives that continue serving their members long after the project ends — while gaining leadership experience, cultural understanding, and professional growth.

Our volunteers are mentors, collaborators, and lifelong learners. From recent graduates to seasoned professionals, everyone brings something unique. Your contribution doesn’t end with your placement — it becomes part of a lasting network of co-operation that continues to grow, inspire, and empower communities worldwide.

How You Can Get Involved

There are two ways to volunteer with VOICE:

1. North–South Placements
Join our partners in Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, or Malawi for a minimum of three months (many volunteers stay six months or more). You’ll work full-time alongside local teams to strengthen co-operatives and advance gender equality.

We cover:
-Flights, visas, travel insurance, police check & medical exams
-Pre-departure an in-country orientation & support
-Monthly stipend to over costs related to housing, meals and in-country transport

2. E-Volunteering
CDF Canada and VOICE also offer remote e-volunteering opportunities, as well as the option to combine your in-country placement with virtual engagement before or after your time abroad, providing you with a flexible, part-time way to share your skills from home!

Please note: E-volunteering opportunities are offered periodically and may not always be available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need co-operative experience?
No — we match your transferable skills (finance, communications, MEL, gender equality, etc.) to the right opportunity.
Our partners on the ground are ready to teach you how co-operatives work and how your skills will help!
Can I choose which country I go to?
VOICE currently has partners in Ethiopia, Malawi, Ghana, and Kenya. Some mandates are country-specific; for others,
you can indicate your preferred country in your application and we’ll do our best to match based on availability and alignment.
Can I go abroad for less than 3 months?
Unfortunately, no. While we occasionally have e-volunteer mandates, in-country mandates require a minimum of 3 months.
CDF Canada & VOICE prioritize sustainable change, which is best achieved when volunteers can fully immerse in the community.
What costs are covered?
CDF covers travel to and from your placement country, insurance, visas, and medical/police checks.
You also receive a living stipend during your placement sufficient for accommodation, meals, and in-country transport.
How long does the application process take?
Recruitment is year-round. You’ll hear from us within 1–2 weeks of applying. The full process (application to departure)
typically takes one to two months, depending on timing, availability, and skills matching.
Do I get any training before I leave?
Absolutely. You’ll receive a pre-departure package (Volunteer Handbook, contacts, comms info) and training on medical and travel prep,
safety and security protocols, insurance coverage, travel logistics (flights, visas, accommodation), and an introduction to VOICE.
You’ll also gain access to CDF Canada’s Volunteer Hub with resources from past and current volunteers.
Do I get training or orientation once I arrive in country?
Yes. Your Country Program Officer (CPO) leads an in-country orientation covering local context and culture, your work plan and deliverables,
safety and logistics, and introductions to partners—plus ongoing mentorship and support throughout your assignment.
Do I have to speak the local language?
English proficiency is required; French or local language skills are an asset but not mandatory.
Is previous volunteer experience necessary?
Not at all — we provide training and support before, during, and after your placement.
Is it safe?
CDF Canada and the VOICE program place the highest priority on the safety and well-being of all staff and volunteers.
We do not send volunteers to locations deemed unsafe. During your time in-country, your CPO is your primary point of contact
and is always available to address any safety-related questions or concerns.
