This year, for International Women’s Day, the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF Canada) participated in the celebration in Kajiado County, Kenya.
I am a volunteer Women’s Economic Empowerment Advisor for the VOICE for Women and Girls Program (VOICE) and the event was marked with speeches from community leaders, including the Guest of Honour, the first lady of Kajiado County. I also took part and gave a speech on the importance of co-operatives on women’s economic growth.
It was wonderful to see men and women speaking out about the issues facing women in the region and around the country. The celebration reflected the community’s effort to support women and girls, and it was great for CDF Canada to support the amazing work already happening in the community.
The event was crowned with awards to women and men who have done exemplary work towards gender equality and women’s empowerment in Kajiado County. The awards were supported by the VOICE program.
Overall, it was a great day, with many speakers and performances from local choirs and artistic groups celebrating International Women’s Day.
