CDF Canada and MUSCCO Partner to Advance Co-operative Finance and Community Resilience in Malawi
The Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF Canada) is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Malawi Union of Savings and Credit Co-operatives Ltd. (MUSCCO), Malawi’s national apex organization for credit unions. This partnership reflects a deep alignment in mission: strengthening financial co-operatives as a means to foster local economic development, expand financial inclusion, and build resilient communities.
CDF Canada and MUSCCO will work together to support capacity building for savings and credit co-operatives (SACCOs), enhance governance systems, and promote financial literacy and economic empowerment—particularly for women and youth. As global and local pressures reshape the development landscape, this partnership reinforces the power of cooperative finance to offer sustainable, community-based alternatives.
MUSCCO has served as a pillar of Malawi’s cooperative finance sector for decades, supporting over 45 member SACCOs and providing system-wide services in training, auditing, advocacy, and technology. Its leadership in developing policy frameworks and financial products tailored to low-income populations makes it a strategic partner in delivering inclusive and responsive financial solutions.
This collaboration will focus on strengthening SACCO networks, fostering mutual learning, and co-designing tools and approaches that elevate the capacity of credit unions to serve their members—and grow sustainably. Together, MUSCCO and CDF Canada aim to reinforce the role of co-operatives as engines of financial inclusion and community transformation across Malawi and beyond.
