CDF Canada and AWFISHNET Partner to Promote Inclusive Economic Growth in Malawi’s Fisheries Sector

AWFISHNET (@awfishnet) / XThe Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF Canada) is proud to announce a new partnership with the African Women Fish Processors and Traders Network, Malawi Chapter (AWFISHNET), a women-led organization focused on strengthening the economic and social roles of women in Malawi’s fisheries sector. This collaboration underscores the importance of gender-inclusive co-operative development in advancing food security, economic empowerment, and climate resilience.

CDF Canada and AWFISHNET will work together to support women’s cooperatives, build technical capacity, and promote equitable participation in the fisheries value chain. At a time when climate instability and food insecurity are affecting communities across the region, this partnership affirms that sustainable development must include the leadership, knowledge, and economic agency of women working at every level of food systems.

Established in 2022, AWFISHNET Malawi represents a growing network of 35 women’s cooperatives, associations, and groups across the country. Its work focuses on capacity building, collective learning, and shared leadership, enabling women to thrive in a sector traditionally dominated by men. Through knowledge exchange, cooperative governance, and advocacy, AWFISHNET helps ensure that women have the tools to shape and grow their livelihoods.

This partnership will promote gender equality, strengthen co-operative systems, and support the development of community-led solutions in Malawi’s fisheries and food security sectors. Together, CDF Canada and AWFISHNET aim to create spaces where women’s leadership is not only recognized—but central to building stronger, more resilient communities.
