Community resilience: How Margret supported community food security in natural disaster aftermath

In March 2023, Tropical Cyclone Freddy caused unprecedented destruction across Malawi, becoming one of the most devastating cyclones on record. The storm destroyed entire harvests, plunging farming co-operative members into severe hardship and threatening their food security and livelihoods.

In response to this emergency, the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF Canada) initiated a relief program aimed at helping 160 farmers—110 women and 50 men. The beneficiaries, identified from groups experiencing the most vulnerability including elderly individuals, single female heads of households, and those with disabilities, received vital resources such as seeds, fertilizers, and crop cuttings. In June, our team revisited the affected regions to evaluate the progress made by these farmers with the support provided.

Among those we met was Margret Kholowa, an elderly woman responsible for her three young grandchildren. Margret’s story of resilience and altruism stood out during our follow-up visit.

Tropical Cyclone Freddy destroyed Margret Kholowa’s crops, but despite the adversity, Margret utilized the resources provided by CDF Canada to replant her farm.

The cyclone had devastated Margret’s crops, which were crucial for both feeding her family and providing income. Despite the adversity, Margret utilized the resources provided by CDF Canada to replant her farm. A subsequent dry spell reduced her crop yield, but Margret’s spirit remained unbroken. She managed to harvest two bags of maize, each weighing 50 kilograms, and generously shared her limited produce with her neighbors who were also struggling. Additionally, Margret is expecting to harvest two bags of dry cassava, estimated to be worth MWK 40,000 ($32 CAD). Her selfless sharing of these resources has been instrumental in supporting her community, demonstrating the power of collective support and solidarity.

Margret’s leadership and kindness have not only provided practical help and food security for her neighbours, but also infused her community with hope and encouragement. Her actions are a powerful testament to the human spirit’s capacity to uplift others even in the face of severe challenges.

Reflecting on the impact of the support she received, Margret expressed heartfelt gratitude. She noted that CDF Canada’s assistance was crucial in enabling her to care for her family and assist her community during these trying times.

Margret Kholowa’s story is one of enduring strength, compassion, and community leadership. In the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Freddy, she has not only managed to sustain her family but has also been a cornerstone in her community’s recovery efforts. Her experience underscores the profound impact of targeted support and the transformative power of co-operative values.

Margret is a beacon of hope for everyone affected by the cyclone, demonstrating that with the right resources and assistance, we can overcome even the most devastating challenges. By providing essential aid to those most affected, the Tropical Cyclone Freddy Recovery Project supports not only individual recovery but also fosters community resilience and economic stability. Margret’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of co-operative membership, demonstrating how effective support can spark significant positive change, reinforcing the importance of community and cooperation in overcoming adversity.
