Overcoming cyclone and drought, vegetable seed provides food and additional revenue for farmer’s family

When Tropical Cyclone Freddy struck Malawi in the spring of 2023, its devastating effects were felt deeply across communities. Among those hardest hit was Roseby Mukawa, a remarkable woman who not only leads a household of seven but also stands as a pillar of strength in her community.

As a head of household, Roseby embodies the resilience and determination of many women in her community. The cyclone’s aftermath left her crops in ruins and her family’s future uncertain. In response, the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada’s (CDF Canada) Tropical Cyclone Freddy Recovery Project provided essential support to Roseby and other co-operative members, including vegetable seeds, fertilizer, maize seeds, and cassava cuttings—crucial resources for rebuilding their farms and lives.

During a recent follow-up visit, we witnessed the significant progress Roseby had made with the support she received. The maize seeds were particularly critical for Roseby. Despite facing a challenging drought after planting, she diligently nurtured her crops. Although the yield was impacted, Roseby managed to harvest 400 kilograms of maize, which has been vital in feeding her family. By the time of our visit, she had used half of the harvest but remained hopeful and determined.

The vegetable seeds brought additional benefits. They not only provided fresh produce for Roseby’s family but also created a new income stream. Roseby sold the surplus vegetables at the local market, earning approximately MWK 48,000 ($38 CAD). This newfound revenue enabled her to purchase essential items, further stabilizing her household and contributing to the overall resilience of her community.

Reflecting on her experience, Roseby shared, “The vegetable seeds not only ensured that my family had enough to eat but also gave me the opportunity to earn income to cover other needs.”

Roseby Mukawa’s story is a powerful example of how targeted support can drive profound change. In the wake of Tropical Cyclone Freddy, Roseby has not only secured her family’s survival but has also played a vital role in supporting her community’s recovery. Her journey highlights the significant impact of CDF Canada’s assistance, showcasing how effective aid can transform adversity into opportunity and strengthen community resilience.

Roseby’s success underscores the importance of providing comprehensive support in times of crisis, aligning with our mission to foster recovery and build sustainable communities. Her story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of solidarity and support.
